Ignition Coil

Aftermarket ignition coil by Spectra Premium

Consisting of a laminated magnetized iron core surrounded by two windings of copper wire, the ignition coil converts the car battery’s relatively low voltage to thousands of volts. The ignition coil voltage from the battery is inputted into the primary winding of high gauge copper wire to create a magnetic field; this changing magnetic field in the iron core induces a much larger voltage in the secondary winding.

Premium copper and high-voltage coating are used to create each long-lasting Spectra Premium ignition coil

Common Ignition Coil Failure Symptoms

  • Direct sign of unit failure will be a severe drop in output voltage
  • Lower gas mileage
  • Loss of power
  • CEL illumination

Common Causes of Failure

Damaged wiring insulation or a bad spark plug can potentially lead to coil damage. Excessive resistance from a related component will cause output voltage to increase higher than the insulation’s functional limits. Certain older technology types can also be affected by environmental or road conditions.
